A one-hour lecture addressing the theme of the “hour”.  As tangential and fragmented as the cards that were provided, the lecture sets out to be a short history of time, place, and things. The most difficult aspect of the project was the limit of the hour. Nearly every exhibition I have been a part of lasted for several weeks and the work I produced was left to stand on its own.  With the limit of the hour, I had to consider the durational aspects of the piece almost more than the piece itself.  I was also very aware that I would be present for the entire duration of the work’s existence. I decided to do a lecture as it appeared to fit with the theme of the exhibition at Five Years and my role as a lecturer ensured that I would not venture into unfamiliar territory. The content addresses the aforementioned difficulty of the limits of the hour; it also reflects the tangential nature of the content in the provided cards.  The lecture should be interesting, informative, and slightly absurd.  It is very important that the lecture is not seen as a performance.  I want the content of the lecture to overshadow the presenter: like a film director, or perhaps more accurately like the musical score in a film during a love scene.

Artists Miriam Craik-Horan, Levin Haegele and Joao da Silva were invited to respond to A Corner Opposite Another in the context of the exhibition Free School, at Five Years gallery. The exhibition was a programme of 33 one-hour sessions considering the idea of a Free School. The artists responded to the cards for an hour each within Five Years’ series of Free School sessions, and the audience was also invited to use the cards to navigate the three artists’ responses. There were no specific rules for how the cards should be used.

Free School took place at Five Years between 24 April and 10 May 2009, curated by Edward Dorrian, Claire Nichols and The Ladies of the Press.
